Re’im | October 7 Memorial
The Nova Festival Massacre Memorial Site, located near Kibbutz Re’im in southern Israel, has become one of the most significant places of remembrance connected with the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
The site stands on the grounds of the Supernova music festival, where thousands of young people had gathered for a celebration of music and peace. In the early morning hours of October 7, the area came under rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. Hamas terrorists then reached the festival grounds and surrounding roads, attacking people attempting to flee and those seeking shelter.
Hundreds of festival participants and security personnel were killed, and dozens of civilians were abducted to Gaza. The massacre at Nova became one of the defining tragedies of October 7 and one of the most widely recognized symbols of the attack.
A Place of Memory
Today, the Re’im site has been transformed into a place of mourning, remembrance, and testimony. Photographs of the victims, Israeli flags, memorial plaques, flowers, personal messages, and installations created by families and friends now fill the area.
Rows of memorial poles bearing the photographs and names of those who were murdered create a powerful visual landscape of remembrance. Each portrait represents an individual life, a family, and a story interrupted on that morning.
The memorial also preserves the geography of the tragedy. The surrounding roads, shelters, open fields, and former festival grounds help visitors understand how rapidly a celebration turned into a scene of terror and mass killing.
Remembering October 7
The Nova memorial is visited by survivors, bereaved families, Israelis from across the country, foreign dignitaries, journalists, and international delegations. It has become a place not only to mourn the victims, but also to preserve their stories and ensure that the events of October 7 are remembered by future generations.
Every photograph, every name, and every memorial at Re’im represents a life that must be remembered.
